If there’s one word I can’t use to describe Mawaru Penguindrum that word is emotionless. As a matter of fact, I’d say MP borders the line of perfectly portrayed drama and cheesy melodrama to the point of flirting with it. This would be the third time Himari’s bitten the dust right? It’s like how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop, but instead its ‘how many times does Himari need to die until the audience doesn’t care anymore.’ This week’s ‘to kill a girl’ worked simply because of the emotional backing provided by the previous scene. However, there will be a point where even I will say, ‘make up you mind already!’
Though, being a Himari fan, it’ll take me quite a bit to stop caring.
This scene was probably Himari and Kanba’s first actual heart to heart conversation since she died in episode 12. But then again, he was only talking to a dead corpse at that point, so that might not count. I actually think this was the first real conversation we’ve seen these two characters have. Isn’t that something else?
It’s kind of funny in a sad kind of way that they’re both trying to save something that will inadvertently cost one of their lives. There’s no way out of this without one of them dying, so that makes it impossible for either of them to be happy. Himari’s happy as long a Kanba’s happy, but that will cost her her life, causing him to unhappy and Kanba’s happy as long as Himari’s happy but with the way things are going he’s not going to live through it so it will end up causing Himari to be unhappy. Neither of them understand that this is what’s going to happen. So, in the end Himari decides it’s best that she returns the life Kanba gave her, so he can live unhappily. You wanna know the first thing he’s gonna do with that new found life? He’s going to find some way to give it back to Himari, because this is basically just one never ending circle of unhappiness.
As for what Himari gave Kanba when they met, I’m thinking it was the apple. Shouma invited Himari into the Takakura family, but I bet it was Himari who invited Kanba into the family. It would make sense as to why he’s so attached to her.
When yo think about it, Kanba deserted his family to live with the Takakura’s, which means he actually gave up trying to save his real brother, Mario, to save someone he had no real connection with. In this way, his love for Himari won out over his love for his own family. He showed he still cares for them in some way when he rescued Masako (Talk about a gorgeous scene), but I wonder what he would do if he had the choice between saving his fake family and his actual flesh and blood. With the way things are going, it doesn’t bode so well for Masako and Mario.
What does Sanetoshi have in store? Honestly, I haven’t the faintest clue but hopefully it’ll include the Princess of Crystal.
p.s. new ending was awesome. At this rate I won’t be able to pick a favorite. Well, the CD comes out on 12/21, though thirty-six dollars is a biiiit excessive.
