I for one have never tried mochi, but after watching a bit of KyoAni’s latest I’m more curious then ever. Of course it certainly helps that there’s a dash of slice of life and a pinch of romance, but the main course of this first episode was probably bird. Dera Mochimazzi was something I never expected from a slice of life show from KyoAni but it certainly opens up this show for many possibilities.
Honestly, I have to say I’ve never seen such a faster switch between genres. One moment I was watching a show about three friends, one of which who lives in a shopping district as a Mochi Makers daughter, and the next she’s all the sudden trailed by this fabulous max bird whose probably a bit to puffed up for his own good.

It was a surprise, along with Daisuke Ono, my favorite male voice actor, playing an extremely feminine florist (girly boy or girl with a deep voice, any guesses?) and what about that ending. Other then that vague plot thread about finding a bride for the prince this show could go so many ways. Its about everything and nothing all at once. Usually though that’s what the makers of K-on are best at. This first episode may have not had me grinning quite like the first episode of K-On but the force is with this one.
First we’ve got Tamako, our charming and somewhat airy lead, whose searching for a long lost song while at the same working her butt off at her family’s mochi store. Then we have the rival family’s son, Mochizou, who’s got a thing for Tamako (cutest potential couple of the year). Lastly we have the bird himself and the thing that ties them all together, Mochi.

I LOVE this anime so far.I have no idea if the florist is a girl or a boy, or what. the bird is kind creepy, but kinda funny. My dad just tried to make Mochi. It didn’t turn out well and failed. two tries later he gives up. then last night he bought some. It’s good but not really my thing. I can’t wait to see how this anime is going to go.
The florist is going to be the mystery of the season that’s for sure. Though, that must have been interesting, trying to make mochi and all. Is it like a dumpling or is it more of a sweet treat? I can never really tell what it is, but with the way KyoAni animates it, it certainly looks like it’ll make a great pillow 🙂
It’ more of a sweet you could say. Mostly it has red bean paste, or other bean paste, or sometimes other paste.
Now that you’ve explained them, I think I’ve actually seen them before somewhere. Though they didn’t look as soft as they do in Tamako Market.
They are really soft and squwishi. And sometimes they are wrapped with this leaf, but I don’t know if it’s fake or a real leaf.
Always enjoyed watching animes created by Kyoto Animation. At first it was K-on that got me impressed but when Kyouka was released I have been obsessed with their studio. Tamako Market is such an adorable anime! Though I’m only on the second episode, I’m enjoying the series so much ^ ^ The characters are so lively and colorful and the story is very subtle but energetic.

Subtle but energetic, that’s a great way to describe Tamako Market. To me, no matter how little movement there is in a scene done by Kyoto Animation, they’re always seems to be life buzzing underneath the surface and I really love that about their work. They’re attention to detail is just amazing. Hopefully you’ll continue to enjoy it.
I just finished watching episode 10 of Tamako market and I just can’t help blushing when Mochizou shows up !! He’s extremely adorableeeee!! XD Like a little tsundere guy!
I love the seiyuu to the Dura though! He’s really good at expressing emotions! I was really surprised!
Like you said, the story is very subtle. I think that’s what makes it so great! I couldn’t even predict the outcome of the story, even though it didn’t seem to have that much in it.
The cast is amazing. I would love to live in a market where everyone is just so helpful and friendly 🙂
The detail is amaaaazing!! The town, the way they make mochi, it’s like I’m watching a mochi documentary XD
I also though of how cool it would be to live in a shopping district where everyone is just super friendly. It’s like being surrounded by family all the time and that’s just bound to induce warm and fuzzy feelings. Where I live right now, we don’t get along with our neighbors because of this, that, and the other thing (long story), so Tamako Market is kind of like a fantasy to me.
Also, Mochizou is perhaps the cutest male tsundere ever. Actually, I’m having a hard time thinking of any other male tsunderes besides him…

Manga/Anime is a sort of route we take to escape all that madness and just be indulged in a world completely different from our own.

There’s Kyo from Fruits Baskets, Ren from La cora d-ora, Syoran from Card Captor Sakura, Natsume from Gakuen Alice, Akito from Kodocha (one of my favorite characters in the anime/manga world >///<) and Kurosaki from Dengeki Daisy.

I wouldn’t say it’s cruel all the time, it’s just anime makes it seem like making friends is a piece of cake. Then again, maybe I’m just not trying hard enough.
And I’d have to agree, Mochizou is the cutest out of the bunch.
Unlike anime, reality is hard I think. You always gotta worry what to say, how to act, worry if someone is talking behind your back or that sort of thing.
In anime, it’s just so lighthearted and friendly you know. I can’t say that to all animes but I somehow wish my life was one XP
